Beginning Teacher Institute Gives New Teachers the Tools
to Succeed

Sunny Martin, a sixth-grade teacher at Sunset Canyon Elementary School in the Paradise Valley Unified School District, had just a semester of teaching under her belt when, in 2008, she attended the Arizona K12 Center's first Beginning Teacher Institute.

In Conversation with Ellen Moir, Founder and CEO of the
New Teacher Center

Ellen Moir began her career in education as a bilingual teacher in the Pajaro Valley Unified School District in Santa Cruz County, California. At that time, she said she spoke to many student teachers coming out of the UC Santa Cruz education program with plenty of theoretical knowledge, but who were having trouble applying that knowledge in the classroom. "They were not coming out prepared to teach," she said. "They were looking for a combination, interweaving theory and practice.

Kimberly Seh
Professional Development Director, Somerton School District
and Principal, Orange Grove Elementary

Kimberly Seh wears a variety of hats in the Somerton School District. This is her fourth year as the Principal of Orange Grove Elementary, where she also dedicated three of those years to building the Professional Development department in her district as its Director. But when Orange Grove's Principal left after last year, the district's Superintendent asked Seh to step back into the role to 'pick up and move the school forward.'

Beginning Teacher Institute

While teaching is an extremely rewarding career, it is not without its difficult and challenging moments. As a beginning teacher, the challenges can even be greater. Our Beginning Teacher Institute is designed for beginning teachers who have one to three years of teaching experience. The focus of this Institute is to help the beginning teacher meet the everyday challenges of teaching. Our time together will include an engaging keynote on Cooperative Learning by Kagan Certified Trainer, Tom Searl, and hands on interactive sessions facilitated by Arizona Master Teachers and National Board Certified Teachers. Breakout sessions will focus on technology, engagement strategies, lesson planning, literacy and mathematics, just to name a few. This two-day learning opportunity will end with an inspirational closing keynote by Sarah Brown-Wessling, 2010 National Teacher of the Year.
