EDUCAUSE and NGLC Announce Second Wave of Funding

Today, Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) announced a second wave of $10 million in funding to expand promising technology tools and applications to help more students prepare for college. It was also announced that The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation is investing $1.4 million to broaden NGLC's funding of grants to innovators. (View the full press release.)

The focus of this second wave of funding is on secondary education, specifically proposals that outline promising technology-enabled instructional and assessment materials to improve mastery of 7th-9th grade level content and competencies, aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Pre-proposals will be due March 4, 2011 and winners are expected to be announced June 13, 2011. View the Request for Proposals at: http://nextgenlearning.org/the-grants

Public education has been a cornerstone of America's advancement. Yet, today, nearly three out of every 10 students do not finish high school. The dropout rate is even higher – nearly 50 percent – among African Americans, Hispanics, and low income students. For those who do go on to college, many are unprepared and will not graduate.

Wave I funding of $20 million focused on solutions for college completion. Finalists eligible for funding as part of Wave I will be announced soon. We can make education better for the millions of students who need it most, and we know that technology is an important tool for enabling greater student engagement and learning success. Working together to improve both secondary and postsecondary education in America, we can help prepare more students for successful lives and meaningful work in today's global economy.

Next Generation Learning Challenges is working to identify and leverage existing technology-based solutions; to build a body of evidence; and to help create an active community of innovators and educators committed to driving next generation learning forward. EDUCAUSE is pleased to be joined by the League for Innovation in the Community College, the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (iNACOL), and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in this effort.

I hope you will continue to share your valuable ideas and expertise with Next Generation Learning Challenges, whether by sharing news of Wave II with your K-12 colleagues, collaborating on a proposal, sharing evidence of what works, or being an active member of the NGLC community.
